REVIEWS / READERS AND PUBLISHERS COMMENTS
A tale about the downhill and resurrection of a man, through his close mates’ friendship and his biggest passion: diving.
Mike Morgan is the protagonist of "Silver Bubbles". The novel starts when he is left down by all the main elements of his life: his wife, the woman he deeply loves who has gone away, his job which is not paying off as it is supposed to be and the consequent financial uncertainty. Yet, a way out exists and it just turns out to be where Mike wanted it to be: a trawler available to buy, his good friends embarking on a big adventure with him and loads of money coming with it. A new life begins.
What is really central in this novel is not only the story and the characters but a bigger and more important presence: the sea. It is one of the natural elements that most sticks inside you as soon as you experience it. The more time you spend out to the sea, the more it shapes you both in your appearance and your soul. That’s what happens to the characters in the novel.
Mike is, first of all, a seaman, a diver. He tells his story in first person, recalling a period of his life going through women, business, money and danger. A salvage worth a lot of money, the first adventure on board of the Sea Gem is what Mike Morgan remembers and tells a story lasting months over which also his personal life "suffers" continuous and sometimes sudden changes. Months over which the sea is always in the background, being a frame for all the action happening to the individual. But the sea is always what comforts the protagonist, what gives him strength, what helps him sort himself out.
Mike lives his life trying and coping with regrets, accompanied by his mates with whom he shares his "sea adventures" on the Sea Gem, his boat, his personal life salvage. His continuous quest aims to eventually reach – as everyone else – a happy life, something difficult to achieve for such a passionate person.
The author masters the description of the sea and of the characters in a perfect way, making the reader feel the power of the natural element and the influence it has in every character in the story. A plot made of colourful people living in a random universe that reflects a possible real world just thanks to its variety.
